It’s not uncommon for homemade remedies and natural tips to circulate among family, friends, and social media as ways to combat dengue. Among these, the use of yam as an ally in fighting the disease has gained attention. But where does this reputation come from, and what is actually known about it?
Yam is a tuber rich in nutrients such as B-complex vitamins, vitamin C, iron, and fiber. In traditional medicine, it’s associated with “detoxifying” properties—meaning it’s believed to help the body eliminate toxins and strengthen the immune system. This perception has led many people to consume yam with the hope of aiding recovery from illnesses, including dengue.
However, to date, there is no solid scientific evidence proving that yam is effective in treating or curing dengue. What is known is that maintaining a balanced diet and proper hydration is essential for the body to better cope with the disease, which can cause high fever, body aches, and a drop in blood platelet levels. In this context, nutritious foods like yam may indirectly support the patient’s overall well-being, but they do not replace medical supervision or treatment prescribed by healthcare professionals.
“In suspected cases of dengue, it’s crucial to seek medical attention and follow the recommended guidelines, avoiding self-medication. Moreover, the best way to prevent the disease is to stop the spread of the Aedes aegypti mosquito by keeping yards clean, eliminating containers with standing water, and using protective measures such as screens, repellents, and mosquito traps,” emphasizes Cristiano Fernandes, Technical Director at Earthwise Brasil.
